Life After Cataract Surgery

After cataract surgery, patients quickly return to their daily routines; however, it is essential to follow certain recommendations to ensure a smooth recovery of vision and reduce the risk of complications.

First few days after surgery:

Mild discomfort or burning, redness of the eye, tearing, blurred vision, and increased light sensitivity are normal. These symptoms usually subside within a few days.

In case of severe pain, contact your doctor immediately.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, especially during the first days after surgery.

  • Avoid heavy physical activity and trauma for 1–2 weeks.

During the first 1–4 weeks:

  • Doctors often prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops.

  • Mild halos around lights may still be present, usually disappearing within 2–4 weeks.

  • Swimming, saunas, baths, and intense sports are restricted for a few weeks.

1–3 months after surgery:

  • Vision gradually normalizes and reaches optimal quality within 1 month.

  • Regular check-ups are necessary: the doctor checks intraocular pressure, the retina, and the overall condition of the eye to rule out glaucoma, infection, and degenerative changes of the retina.

Main restrictions:

  • Heavy physical labor / running / lifting weights: 1–2 weeks

  • Painful contact with the eyes: 1–2 weeks

  • Swimming / sauna / baths: 2–4 weeks

  • Sports activities: 4–6 weeks, as advised by your doctor

The first 1–2 weeks after surgery require extra caution. Many restrictions are lifted after 1 month, and full eye function is restored.
